Home Bone Fishing Inshore Fishing Deep Sea Fishing Your Guides Fishing Director Equipment List Tournament Season Lodging & More Contact Us | | Crooked Island is remote and we have difficulty getting and keeping tackle. Therefore, I feel it is in the best interest of all of our guests to
arrive prepared with as much of their own fishing equipment as possible. Here are
a few suggestions.
 | Fly Rod:
8 - 9 weight rods are better suited for bonefishing with floating or
intermediate lines. If you desire tackling some of the other species,
9 - 12 weight rods could be used. |
 | Fly Reels:
Saltwater reels with backing capabilities of up to 200 yards for bonefishing
is necessary. The larger the fish, the more important your equipment
becomes. 10 - 12 weight lines should have 250 - 300 yards. |
 | Fly Line:
While fishing the flats, both floating and intermediate lines are
used. While fishing reefs and off-shore all lines are used, including
very fast sinking lines up to 750 grain. |
 | Leaders:
For bone fish and permit 9 - 12 foot leaders at 10 pound test. Other
species, from the butt section taper down to somewhere between 10 to 20
pound and then add a shock leader 40, 60, 80 pound test or wire. |
 | Bone Fish Flies:
Gottcha, Simiram, Epoxies and Crazy Charlies. Most bonefish flies
work. One should have from size 2 to size 6 with varying weights. |
 | Permit Flies:
Crab flies and clousers |
 | Flies for Other Species:
Sharks, cudas, jacks all like poppers. Most fish can be caught on
clousers, deceivers and various other streamers. |
 | Conventional Tackle:
Spinning and plug rods. Bone Fish - spinning rods, medium to medium
light - 6 foot with 8 to 10 pound line. Cudas, jacks, sharks, snapper,
grouper - spinning, plug or jigging rods. Fast action rods are recommended
- 7 foot with 20 - 30 pound test. |
 | Lures:
Bonefish - hooks size 2 & 4 with bait - small jigs work well.
Berkley power grub, curley tail grubs - light tan, pink, and chartreuse.
Other species - If you are planning on spending much time inshore fishing,
having a good assortment of lures, gigs and spoons will go a long way.
It is important that one buys saltwater lures with stainless hooks.
Suggested lures - top water chugers, spoons from 1/4oz - 1/2oz (red/white,
red/yellow, solid white or yellow), rapala type lures, small jigs from 1/2oz - 1oz, lead from 1/2oz - 2oz, bait hooks size 4 - 6/0. |
